Waterloo
Airshow: Squadron 28 participated in the Waterloo IA
Thunder In The Valley Air Show from August 26 – August 28, 2011.
Well over 50,000 people attended the show with the draw being the
USAF Thunderbirds with perfect weather. In keeping with
Squadron 28’s mission 200 plus kids were given cockpit tours of
the T41A.
Steven was from a
Navion (L-17) next to us. He helped give tours and sell T
shirts. Very knowledgeable!
Dodge Center Young
Eagles: On June 18,
2011 SMWoA Squadron 28 held an open house along with our 2nd annual
Young Eagle rides given to area youth between 8 and 17 years old.
This excellent program gives the youth an exposure to aircraft and
flights. For many it was a first time ever in an aircraft. The Young
Eagles program was launched in 1992 to give interested young people,
ages 8 - 17, an opportunity to go flying in a general aviation
airplane. These flights are offered free of charge and were made
possible through the generosity of SMWoA Squadron 28 along with
members from the Rochester MN Experimental Aircraft Association. The
flight path was from Dodge Center airport to Byron and back to Dodge
Center. This gave the Young Eagles the chance to see Rochester
International Airport and the City of Rochester. A short ground
school was done by Dick Fechter of SMWoA Squadron 28 to give the
youth an overview of how aircraft fly and also answered any
questions.
